Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a veneer for use in plywood, dress boards and the like by a method wherein a plurality of fibrous core strips obtained from trees or other plants are arranged with their fiber directions aligned, then they are contained in a mold together with a resin adhesive, and pressure formed to be a block, and the block is sliced in the direction of the pressure applied thereto. CONSTITUTION:A barker 2 provided with projecting cutter blades 3, 3... at adequate intervals is arranged near the peripheral surface of a log 1 obtained from a broadleaf tree, conifer, or the like and having an adequate length and an adequate cross-sectional area, the barker 2 being parallel with the axis of the log 1. With the log 1 fixed in place, the tip ends of the cutter blades 3, 3... are brought into contact with the log 1 to obtain thin fibrous core strips 4. The strips 4 are dried, arranged with their fiber directions aligned, then they are mixed with a resin adhesive, filled in the space between form plates 6, 6, compressed by a hydraulic machine through compressing plates 7, 7, and solidified by the resin adhesive, and the solidified block is released from the mold (i.e., the assembly of the plates 6, 6, 7, 7). In this case, not only the fibers but the foreign matters originally present in the wood material or consciously added thereto are pressure formed simultaneously. The thus obtained block is sliced in the compression direction to a desired thickness, to obtain veneers highly resistant to tension and compression in the vertical direction.
