Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to efficiently liquefy coal with a small amount of hydrogen, by mounting gas/liquid separators communicated with a pressure equalizing drum through conduits, on tubular reactors installed between eash inlets for gaseous H2 and between the last H2 gas inlet and a reaction effluent outlet, wherein the gas/liquid separators are installed at lower positions, the nearer they are to the outlet of the reaction effluent.
CONSTITUTION: A coal paste 9, after preheated to a predetermined temperature, is fed to the lower portion of the first reaction tube 3, rises upwardly through the tube 3 together with hydrogen from an inlet 6, and hydrogenated during rising. The hydrogenated product is separated into a reaction off gas and a paste in a gas/liquid separator 5 positioned on the top of the tube 3. The paste flows down through a descending reaction tube 4. During descending, absorbed hydrogen is consumed. Next, in the second reaction tube 3', the paste is further reacted with hydrogen from an inlet 6', separated into a liquid and a gas in a gas/liquid separator 5' and sent to a reaction tube 4'. Reactions similar to above are repeated in the reactor tubes following the third reaction tube. The liquid from the last reaction tube 3" is an oily product and is separated into gas 13 and heavy oil 14 in a high pressure separator 8. Separated gases from gas/liquid separators 5, 5' and 5" are introduced to a pressure equalizing drum 7 and sent as a reaction off gas to a gas treatment system.
