Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and impact value of a casting of an Al-Cu type alloy contg. Zn, Mg, Ti and other elements by cooling the casting under specified conditions followed by multistage soln. heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: An Al-Cu type alloy is refined contg. Cu 2.5W4.5%, Zn 0.5W 2.5%, Mg 0.4W1.5%, Ti 0.03W0.15% and one or more among Cr 0.1W0.5%, Mn 0.1W0.5%, Si 0.1W0.5% and Fe<0.2%. This molten metal is cast in a mold and solidified while adjusting the molten metal cooling rate in the mold to 1W10°C/sec and the cooling rate in the solidifying zone to 1.0W6.5°C/sec. The resulting alloy is then subjected to the first-stage soln. heat treatment at a solidus line temp. of the alloy to the temp. 20°C below the solidus line temp., the second-stage and later-stage soln. heat treatments at a solidus line temp. to the temp 50°C above the solidus line temp., and tempering. Thus, an Al-Cu type alloy with superior tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and impact value is obtd.
