Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide title coating material compsn. which is useful as a binder for the magnetic recording layer of a magnetic tape, excels in the dispersiblity of magnetic powder and contains a resin produced by a method wherein 1,3-pentadiene is homopolymerized or copolymerized with another monomer, and the resulting polymer is epoxidized and then hydroxylated.
CONSTITUTION: 1,3-Pentadiene is homopolymerized or copolymerized with another monomer such as butadiene, isoprene, styrene, vinyltoluene, or acrylonitrile to obtain a polymer having an iodine value of 200W500, an average MW of 500W 10,000 in which 1,4-bond is 30W40%, 1,2-bond or 3,4-bond is 60W70% and cis- bond/trans-bond is 12/88W20/80. The polymer is epoxidized and then hydroxylated to obtain a resin having an epoxy eq. of 240W1,200, a hydroxyl eq. of 350W2,240 and a softening point of 30W150°C. The desired magnetic coating material compsn. can be obtd. by incorporating 5W50wt% (based the weight of whole resin component) of the produced resin into the compsn.
