Abstract

PURPOSE: To finely and reversibly control a membrane potential with radiation of light, by using a membrane of a high molecular compound containing a photo- isomerizable spiropyrane compound in a principal chain or a side chain and having a hydrophilic group.
CONSTITUTION: A high molecular compound, such as 1',3',3'-trimethyl-6-nitro-8- methacryloxy methyl benzospiropyrane containing a spiropyrane compound, such as benzospiropyrane derivative in a principal chain or side chain, and having a hydrophilic group is dissolved in a suitable solvent. The resulting solution is extended to obtain a membrane. This membrane is inserted between cells and irradiated with light emitted from a suitable light source and having a wave-length meeting the purpose, so as to reversibly varying the membrane potential. When the intensity of the light in use and the radiation time are regulated, the membrane potential can be finely varied. This allows a device for optical communication to be produced, which permits converting an optical signal into an electric signal. It is expected that the above technique will be utilized in the optcial information processing industries and in the field of optoelectronics.
