Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the frequency of anode effect occurrence by a method wherein carbonaceous block consisting of carbonaceous material having an anisotropic ratio of resistivity below a specified value is used as the anode of a prebake type electrolytic furnace.
CONSTITUTION: In the prebake type electrolytic furnace, the anode uses carbonaceous block consisting of carbon material having preferably isotropy, or anisotropy ratio of resistivity less than 1.2 in electrolytsis of Al2O3 dissolved in molten salt essentially consisting of cryolite. This drastically increases its critical current density and therefore reduces the formation of graphite fluoride layer on the anode surface, so that the electrode voltage uprise can be prevented. As such, the process permits a stable operation to be maintained under high current density.
