Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a powder metallurgical metallic powder having desired carbon content and excellent granular configuration by employing nonpolarized solvent or oils containing carburization acceleratior as an atomizing medium when pulverizing molten metal is pulverized into metallic powder by an atomizing process.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal is atomized with liquid atomizing medium into atmosphere isolated from the atmospheric air to produce metallic powder having irregular configuration and excellent green compacting properties. The atomizing medium used in this case may include for example nonpolarized solvent such as amyl benzene, xylene, or the like or mineral oil, animal or vegeable oil containing less than 2W6% by volume of carburization acceleration reagent such as hydrocarbon such as CH4, C3H8 or the like, CO or the like. Since the atomized metallic powder incorporates the atomizing medium including high thermal capacity liquid, it is sufficiently cooled to become irregular configuration and to obtain metallic powder particles having suitable carbon and on oxidization adapted for powder metallurgical stock. The atomizing medium used is isolated and recovered by multistage fluidized layers using inert gas for reuse.
