Abstract

PURPOSE: An oxazoline compound with a specific structure is made to act on an unsaturated polyester bearing carboxyl groups to reduce the free carboxyl groups, thus producing title resin having good curing properties.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of (A) an unsaturated polyester having carboxyl groups, preferably with an acid value of 10W50, with (B) an oxazoline derivative of the formula (R is n-valent aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbyl; R1WR4 are H, lower alkyl; n is 1W4) is effected preferably at 130W220°C for 10minW3hr. The amount of the component B employed is preferably (the molecular weight of component B) × (the difference in acid value between the unsaturated polyester and the desired) × [the amount of component A (g)]/(n×56100).
EFFECT: The resulting polyester can be used as a thickener or curing agent because it does not foam by the reaction with isocyanate compounds.
