Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for amino acids, drugs, etc. with ease in high yields, by reacting phthalimide with α-chloroacrylonitrile in the presence of an alkaline (earth) metal salt of phthalimide in an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of α-chloro-β-phthalimidopropionitrile through the reaction of 1mol phthalimide and 1W3mol (preferably 1.05W2.0mol) α-chloroacrylonitrile, the reaction is carried out in the presence of an alkaline (earth) metal salt (0.01W0.2mol based on phthalimide), e.g., lithium phthalimide, sodium phthalimide, potassium phthalimide, etc. in an organic solvent, e.g., methanol, etc.
EFFECT: Side reactions, e.g., polymerization or decomposition of α-acrylonitrile, and the ring opening of phthalimide ring are suppressed. The amount of α-acrylonitrile can be extremely reduced and the reaction procedure is simple.
