Abstract

PURPOSE: To attain an effective condition of the intake over an entire load range, by providing a changing mechanism to alter the valve lift of the moving valve mechanism of an internal combustion engine, providing a lap portion on the sliding contact faces of a valve and a valve seat and gradually changing the lap portion.
CONSTITUTION: An annular lap portion 11, which slides with a prescribed travel in contact with a valve seat 6, is provided on the head 10 of an intake valve 3 which is opened or closed by a cam 5 that is rotated by a rocker arm 4 synchronously with the rotation of an engine. The lap portion 11 comprises an outer wall section 10a which is located on the peripheral surface of the head 10 concentrically with a stem 8 and which has a prescribed height, and an inner wall section 6a which is located on a valve seat 6 and which slides in contact with the outer wall section 10a. The thickness of the outer wall section 10a is gradually varied so that a prescribed gradient is defined between parts 10a1, 10a2. A support arm 7 is swung centering a fulcrum 7a to alter the fulcrum of the rocker arm 4 to change the lift of the valve.
