Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the hardened layer of an end face to an even thickness by rotating a hardening coil with a deviation of its center from the center of the object to be hardened. CONSTITUTION:In the case of hardening the end face of a circular cylindrical sample 1, a circular hardening coil 2 is opposed to the sample 1 to be hardened by spacing the centerline of the sample 1 and the centerline of the hardening coil 2 by a certain distance (d). Thence, when the sample 1 is rotated about the central axis, the shape of the resultant hardened layer becomes symmetrical and becomes close to flat of less extension on the side face. In the case of automating the hardening and continuously operating the same, the hardening coil 2 is made of hairpin type and the sample 1 is moved therein while being rotated. At this time, a certain distance (d) is provided between the centerline of the hairpin type coil 2 and the centerline of the sample 1.
