Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately measure a thickness, by projecting laser light in the moving direction of a measuring unit and receiving the laser light by the measuring unit to detect displacement from the laser light in the direction of the thickness.
CONSTITUTION: Digital cylinders 7 are operated to place rails 4 at an appropriate distance from a rolled material 1. Each laser light source 30 is adjusted to make laser light 32 coincident with a target 33. Air pressure is applied to a cylinder chamber of a measuring unit 5 to put response member 9 in a working state. A motor 15 is driven to move the measuring unit 5 on the rail 4. The response of the member 9 to the sourface of the rolled material 1 is detected by a laser light detector 31 to determine displacement from the laser light. The thickness of the rolled material 1 along its total width is measured from the determined displacement and the dimensions of parts.
