Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an exact binary signal even if a background is varied, by dividing a scanning portion into several local areas, and making an average level of each local area a threshold level.
CONSTITUTION: A scanning reflected ray of a form 1 is input to sample holding circuits 51W59 through an optical converter 4. The sample holding circuits 51W59 are divided into areas 51W53, 54W56 and 57W59, and are input to average level detection circuits 61W63. Threshold levels L1WL3 are generated in reference voltage generating circuits 71W73 by the aforesaid outputs. The outputs of the sample holding circuits 51W59 are compared with the levels L1WL3 by the comparators 81W83, and the results are sent to a discriminating circuit 10 in order to discriminate a character. Thus, an exact binary operation can be carried out even if the background is varied.
