Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare formic acid, acetic acid and propionic acid efficiently and advantageously, by radiating ionizing radiations to a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide which is supposedly available even in the future, or optionally its mixture with methane and/or carbon dioxide.
CONSTITUTION: Formic acid, acetic acid and propionic acid are prepared efficiently and advantageously by radiating ionizing radiations to a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, e.g. synthetic gas, etc., or its mixture with methane and/or carbon dioxide. The radiation source is, e.g. an accelerator, 60Co, etc. Preferably the reaction temperature is the ordinary temperature to 150°C and the reaction pressure is the ordinary pressure to several tens atm. When a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide is used as the raw material, higher amount of the carbon monoxide content is advantageous for the formation of formic acid and acetic acid. Addition of methane accelerates the formation of acetic acid and addition of carbon dioxide accelerates the formation of formic acid.
