Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a test piece in which a prescribed quantity of a fatigue crack is provided, by applying a repeated load to a build-up bead formed on a surface so that the crack extends from a cut-out provided in the bead.
CONSTITUTION: A build-up bead 2 is provided in a prescribed position on the surface of a material 1 such as a heat transfer tube. A sharp notch 3 is made in the central part of the bead 2 by a saw, a high speed cutter, spark erosion or the like. Three-point bend height cycle fatigue is caused under such a low load by a fatigue tester that fatigue lifetime is 105 cycles or more. A through fatigue crack 4 is thus produced so that it extends from the artificial cut-out 3. The build-up bead 2 is then removed, which results in obtaining a test piece.
