PURPOSE:To provide a compact and light electromagnetic coupling apparatus, by interposing the second coupling member having coupling gear between the first coupling member and a fixed member, in the manner that the second coupling member can be engaged with and disengaged from the first coupling member and the fixed member against the force of a resilient member by means of electromagnetic coil of the like. CONSTITUTION:When electromagnetic coil 4 is energized, magnetic flux is produced to pass through the end face including iron core 2 and coupling gear 12 of rotor 1. Resultantly, armature 8 is moved toward fixed iron core 2 against the force of resilient member 11. Further, coupling gear 15 of armature 8 is disengaged from coupling gear 14 of geared wheel 7 fixed to a stationary portion of a machine (not shown). At the same time, rotor 1 and armature 8 are coupled together through engagement of their coupling gears 12 and 13, so that rotation of rotor 1 is transmitted to hub 9 to be driven. On the other hand, when electromagnetic coil 4 is de-energized, armature 8 is retracted toward geared wheel 7 by the force of resilient member 11, so that power transmission to hub 9 is interrupted.
