Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily manufacture a foamed Al alloy of excellent quality, by adding fine powder of a synthetic calcium silicate hydrate to a molten Al alloy whose viscosity is increased by blowing air thereinto.
CONSTITUTION: Air is blown into a molten Al alloy to increase its viscosity to 3W 15 times. 3W20wt% of a synthetic calcium silicate hydrate (XCaO, YSiO2, ZH2O) with a grain diameter of 0.1W100μ is added to the molten alloy. The synthetic calcium silicate hydrate is easy to change into a carbonate. Therefore, a more effect can be produced if some calcium is changed into CaCO3 by an appropriate quantity of carbonating treatment after hydrothermal synthesis in an autoclave. The hydrate almost instantaneously releases its crystal water and CO2 in the molten material so that bubbles are present in the Al alloy when it is solidified. This results in providing a foamed Al alloy which has a porosity of 90% or more and small weight and excels in sound and impact absorption.
