Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a starting material for perfumes, medicines, and high polymers economically, by heating hexoses prepared through hydrolysis of cellulose and starch, in the presence of a specific catalyst easily separable and reusable after the reaction.
CONSTITUTION: Hexoses or di- or polysaccharides containing hexoses are dehydrated or hydrolyzed and dehydrated in the presence of a heat-resistant inorganic solid catalyst, e.g. zirconium phosphate, in a polar solvent, e.g. DMSO, at 80W200°C, preferably 120W170°C, to give hydroxymethylfurfural. Ketohexoses, e.g. D-fructose or L-sorbose, may be preferred as the hexoses, and inulin, fructan, or isomerized sugar of glucose may be used as the raw material.
