Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase combustion speed and to thereby enhance the output of engine, by shaping the top surface of piston such that its main squish area is higher than the remaining portion, and connecting these two portions with a smoothly curved surface.
CONSTITUTION: On the opposite sides of cimbustion chamber C, there are formed the first and the second squish areas S1, S2 which form a narrow space when piston 4 comes to its uppermost position. The portion 41 of the top surface of piston 4 constituting the first squish area S1 is made higher than the remaining area 42, and a step 43 made of an inclined surface is formed at the boundary of these two areas 41 and 42, in the manner that areas 41, 42 are connected to the stepped portion 43 via a smoothly curved surface. The level difference between the area 41 and area 42 is preferably 0.5W4mm. With such an arrangement, output of engine can be raised by increasing the combustion speed of mixture in combustion chamber C.
