Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce iron powder possessing excellent deoxidizing performance, by roughly reducing powder of iron oxide with reducing agent such as powder coke at high temperature, grinding finely, tempering in hydrogen atmosphere, and covering the surface with metal halide aqueous solution or aqueous solution of acid, and drying in vacuum.
CONSTITUTION: After grinding iron oxide material such as mill scale, it is charged in a sagger in layers with reducing agent of powder coke. Putting a lid on the sagger, the material is heated in a tunnel furnace to 1000W1200°C to be roughly reduced to produce a cake-form sponge iron. This sponge iron is ground to 35W 100-mesh size or below until the apparent specific gravity is 2.0W2.5kg/cm2. This fine ground sponge iron is tempered at 600W750°C in reducing atmosphere mainly composed of hydrogen. After cooling, the surface is sufficiently covered with aqueous solution of acid or metal halide aqueous solution by ordinary method, and is dried in vacuum. Thus is produced iron powder for deoxidation, having a strong affinity for oxygen.
