Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide high-purity sodium hypochlorite excellent in stability by reacting chlorine gas with NaOH obtained by the diaphragm process from which heavy metals have been removed by partial chlorination.
CONSTITUTION: Chlorine is blown into NaOH obtained by diaphragm electrolysis of NaCl to effect partial chlorination with chlorination ratio giving sodium hypochlorite in a concentration of 0.0001W5%. This precipitates heavy metals, particularly Ni, which are removed by filtration. This partially chlorinated liquid is reacted with chlorine gas to provide sodium hypochlorite. The method gives large particles of NaCl, and a chlorine amount used per product is made equal to the one when using NaOH obtained by the mercury process.
