Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently separate a minute quantity of an organic substance from water through simple operation, by using a high-molecular compound which reversibly changes from hydrophobic to hydrophilic depending on the temperature, as an adsorbent to separate the hydrophobic organic substance from the water.
CONSTITUTION: A high-molecular compound such as polyvinyl methyl ether or methyl cellulose is brought as an adsorbent into contact with an aqueous solution containing a minute quantity of a hydrophobic organic substance such as a surface active agent or phenol, when the high-molecular compound is at such a temperature that it is hydrophobic. The organic substance is thus separated by adsorption. The high-molecular compound is thereafter set at such a temperature that it is hydrophilic. The adsorbed organic substance is desorbed for recovery by utilizing the temperature-dependent reversible change of the high-molecular compound between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. The organic substance is thus efficiently separated and recovered.
