Abstract

PURPOSE:To shorten the length of irradiation time of gamma-rays and obtain a separator with a low electric resistance at a low cost, by graft copolymerizing a monomer like acrylic acid to a film of a copolymer made from an olefine and a monomer like acrylic acid. CONSTITUTION:To a film of a copolymer made from an olefine like ethylene, propylene, etc. and a monomer of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or the like represented by the general formula shown in the figure (where R for H or CH3, X for H, CH3, C2H5 or a metal), is graft-polymerized the same monomer as defined in the above. For instance, a random copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid (copolymerization rate: 20mol% of the acrylic acid) is extrusion-molded at a temperature of 200- 220 deg.C to form a film of about 50mu in thickness. Placing said film in an acrylic acid of 100%, after an irradiation of gamma-ray (15000rads/hour) for 30min., discharging the acrylic acid, the film is washed to obtain a separator with a grafting rate of 20mol% of the acrylic acid.
