PURPOSE:To prevent a thyristor from damaging due to a continuous supply of current when a motor is not started, by shifting the firing angle of a power supply side thyristor converter when the actual value of the speed of the motor has been zero for a specified time or longer under the condition where the speed setting value of the motor is not zero. CONSTITUTION:When the speed setting value of a motor is not zero and the actual value of the speed of the motor is zero, the output of a speed setting value derector 16 becomes ''1'', and the output of an actual speed value detector 15 becomes ''0'', and a logic element 18 outputs a logic signal ''1''. A timer 20 outputs a signal ''1'' when a logic signal ''1'' is inputted to the timer 20 for the set time or longer. A switch insstruction calculator 12 gives a firing angle shift instruction to a current controller 9 when the output of the timer 20 is ''1'' and sets the operating condition of the power supply side thyristor converter to the condition for converting DC into AC.
