The comparators 22, 23 compare the average interpole voltage Vg which is an interpole voltage in the spark erosion clearance equalized by a resistor 24 and condenser 25 with the upper and lower limits Vr2, Vr1 of an interpole voltage when the erosion clearance is adequate and discriminate whether or not a wire electrode 2 is too apart from the work 1 or too close. A controller 26 converts the keep-away signal S1 and the keep- close signal S2 into the direction of relatively driving the wire electrode 2 in accordance with the quadrant.
