Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a finely powdered binder having superior resistance and workability and capable of being mixed with carbon aggregate in the powder state to give a carbon product by mix-contacting a soln. of a carbon precursor in a solvent to a solvent whose solvent power is lower than that of the former solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A soln. prepared by dissolving a solvent-sol. component of a carbon precursor in a solvent at a temp. below the b.p. of the solvent is mix-contacted to a solvent whose solvent power is lower than that of the former solvent to obtain a deposited solid. Since this solide is obtd. in the form of fine powder, when it is used as a binder for a high quality carbon product, this binder and carbon aggregate can be mixed in the powder state. The finely powdered binder is adjusted to an average grain size of 50μ or less, and the carbon aggregate pref. has an average grain size of 300μ or less. The carbon precursor applied may be petroleum pitch, coal pitch, asphalt or polyvinyl chloride pitch.
