Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out efficiently the electrodialysis of an electrolyte such as ion by preventing the diffusion-leakage of a neutral substance and the adhesion of the neutral substance to the face of a membrane by a method wherein the concentration of the neutral substance in a solution is controlled and an ion exchange membrane whose surface is specifically treated is used.
CONSTITUTION: In a method of separating a neutral substance from an electrolyte soln. contg. it by electrodialysis employing an ion exchange membrane, a solution contg. not less than 6wt% of the neutral substance is used and an ion exchange membrane having opposite charge to the charge of exchange group thereof is used. For example, benzoyl peroxide is added to a mixt. of styrene-divinylbenzene and polyvinyl chloride. A plain weave cloth made of PVC is coated with the resulting mixt. The resulting material is polymerized to form a macromolecular membrane. The membrane is immersed at a temp. of 60°C in 98% or more conc. sulfuric acid and then in a 1% aq. soln. of sodium polystyrenesulfonate to produce an anion- exchange membrane. By using the produced membrane, a brine contg. glucose is subjected to electrodialysis. The diffusion-leakage rate of the glucose was not more than 5.5g.
