Abstract
PURPOSE:To determine objectively and accurately the quality of meat of animals in the living condition before slaughter by a method wherein a required cross section is selected in the body of a living animal, and thereby the X-ray absorption coefficients are obtained at various points on the cross section. CONSTITUTION:A lump of meat 1 to be tested is placed in frame 4 so that its cross section T to be tested is matched with X-ray tube 5 and the rotational surface of detector 6. By operating X-ray tube 5 and detector 6 in coordination while X-ray are radiated from X-ray tube 5, cross section T is linearly scanned, and during this time, the intensity of the incident X-ray and the intensity of the transmitted X-ray are measured. After completion of the scanning, frame 4 is turned by one degree and similar linear scanning and measurement are operated. This measurement is repeated until frame 4 rotates 180 deg.. These measured data are sent to picture image processing unit 3 and are stored in magnetic tape device 16. By using these measured data, the X-ray absorption coefficient of each point on cross section T is obtained and thereby the condition of distribution of muscular tissue and fatty tissue is obtained.
