Abstract
PURPOSE: The stereoisomer mixture of 3-methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride, which mainly contains the cis isomer, is treated with hydrogen in the presence of a specific metal and amine and converted into the trans isomer that shows excellent properties as a curing agent for epoxy resins.
CONSTITUTION: The stereoisomer mixture of 3-methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride consisting mainly of the cis isomer is treated with hydrogen in the presence of a metal in group VIII of the periodic table and an amine and isomerized. The temperature is 100W200°C and time is 2W10 hours. The content of the trans isomer can be changed depending on the purpose by varying the reaction temperatur and time. The starting material, over 90% cis content, is obtained by the hydrogenation of 3-methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride. The hydrogenation and isomerization are desired to be effected continuously.
