Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A thioester compound shown by the formula (R is 1W10C straight-chain alkyl).
EXAMPLE: Trans-4-n-amylcyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid-4'-cyanophenylthioester.
USE: A material for a liquid crystal composition. Dielectric anisotropy is positive. Having a low viscosity and a high speed of response of a display body. Having a wide temperature range for use of about 15°C.
PROCESS: A trans-4-n-alkylcyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid is reacted with excess SOCl2 under reflux at elevated temperature. Aftet reflux, excess SOCl2 is distilled away and a trans-4-n-alkylcyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid chloride is obtained by means of vacuum distillation. Equimolar amounts of both the carboxylic acid chloride and 4-cyanothiophenol are added to pyridine and allowed to stand for a night. The resulting pyridine solution is added to cold concentrated hydrochloric acid to reparate out crystal, which is recrystallized from ethanol to give a thioester compound shown by the formula.
