Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound which is an important raw material for the organic chemical industry, easily, whtout using petroleum resources, from methane, CO and CO2 which can be abundantly supplied for a long time, by irradiating with ionizing radiation.
CONSTITUTION: Mixed gas of methane/CO2, methane/CO or methane/CO2/CO is irradiated with electron rays through the irradiation window of a reactor to give acetic acid and/or propionic acid. Cobalt-60 or a fission product of used nuclear fuels is used in place of an accelerator as the radiation source. The radiation from a fission reactor or a fusion reactor can also be used. The reaction tamp. is around room tamp. to 300°C. The pressure can be around normal pressure to several tens atms. The most preferable concentration of methane is 10% in case of the mixed gas of methane and CO2, and 30% in case of the mixed gas of methane and CO.
