Abstract

1279648 Analysing samples containing radioactive isotopes PACKARD INSTRUMENT CO Inc 29 Sept 1969 [29 April 1969] 47697/69 Heading B1X Liquid form samples are prepared for radioactive nuclide assay by a method comprising introducing oxygen at a controlled rate via 23, 24, 25 into a combustion zone, combusting in boat 10 in the zone a preselected amount of sample containing at least one radioactive nuclide oxidizable to a radioactive gasiform oxide, introducing to the combustion zone at or near the beginning of the combustion a predetermined amount of a gasiform oxide of a non-radioactive isotope of the nuclide, for example CO 2 , via 112, 113, 114, or H 2 O, via 105, 102; 106, 109, and recovering the resulting mixed gasiform oxides of the radioactive nuclide and the non-radioactive nuclide as a liquid form sample. The gasiform oxides may be fed through heat exchanger tube 42 where vapours are condensed, uncondensed gases then passing to column 74. Liquid supply systems 62, 82 serve to feed liquid scintillator to tube 42 and column 74 respectively. The procedure is similar to that of Specification 1,222,587, to which reference is made.
