CONSTITUTION: A mutant mold, which belongs to Mycobacterium parafortutitum complex and assimilate sterols as a substrate to produce more predominantly androst-4-ene-3,17-dione than androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione, e.g., Mycobacterium parafortutitum complex MCI-0807 (FERM-4476) is cultured in a medium containing various kinds of sterols, as cholesterol or stigmasterol, and a 3 carbon atom ester derivative.
