Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent burst errors from being generated, by detecting optically an optical disc surface defective part before the irradiation point of a recording light beam and by performing control so that information may be recorded with the surface defective part avoided.
CONSTITUTION: Defect detection means 60 on an optical disc consists of light generator 30 to generate light beam 15 having comparatively weak energy, lens 31 to project this light beam 15 as needle-shaped light beam 16, half mirror 32 to refract the reflection light from point 26 as beam 17 to the lens 33 side, and photo detector 34. Photo detector 34 discriminates existence of the defective part at point 26, which is spaced l away before irradiation point 25 of recording light beam 12, and controls recording operations so that information may be prevented from being recording on the defective part of the optical disc. Consequently, burst errors based on the defective part of the optical disc can be avoided without considerable difficulty.
