Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a high-grade, low-viscosity carboxymethylethylcellulose having excellent whiteness and transparency, by dissolving a high-viscosity carboxymethylethylcellulose in an aqueous solution of a lower alkanol and heat-treating the solution together with H2O2.
CONSTITUTION: A high-viscosity carboxymethylethylcellulose (5W50wt%) is dissolved in a mixture of a 1W4C lower alkanol and water in a weight ratio of 95:5W 70:30 and, then H2O2 is added thereto in an amount of 0.1W50wt%, pref. 1W 30wt%, based on the weight of dried carboxymethylethylcellulose. The resulting solution is subjected to heat-treatment at a temperature between 60°C and the boiling temperature of the system, whereby the depolymerization of the high-viscosity carboxymethylethylcellulose is effected. The low-viscosity carboxymethylethylcellulose thus obtained, which is insoluble in water, is precipitated by removing the alkanol.
