Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high purity magnesium hydroxide at a low price, by circulating cathode solution separated and recovered magnesium hydroxide produced in the cathode solution, to anode room and maintaining the concentration of magnesium chloride in the cathode solution at a fixed extent.
CONSTITUTION: On occasion of electrolyzing the water solution of magnesium chloride, such as bittern etc., in the diaphragm type electrolytic bath 1 composed of the cathode room 2 and the anode room 3, raw material is continuously supplied from the supply apparatus 5, 6 to the room 2, 3 at a fixed speed and bromine, chlorine etc., are recovered by the anode 3 and the recovering apparatus 7 by usual method and also, magnesium hydroxide produced in the room 2 is separated and recovered by the separating apparatus 4. Production of basic magnesium chloride is controlled and a high purity magnesium hydroxide is obtained at a low price by circulating separated cathode solution to the room 2 (a part of it is discharged out of system) and maintaining the concentration of magnesium chloride at 0.05W10wt% or less calculated in terms of anhydride. NaOh etc. having a higher electrolytic voltage than magnesium chloride, is able to supply as circulating solution from the apparatus 8.
