Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce title titanium dioxide useful as a colorant of oily ink for writing tools, by heat-treating titanium dioxide in a solution of a surfactant with specific properties and an oily solvent, removing the moisture contained in the titanium dioxide, and thereby adhering the surfactant to the titanium dioxide.
CONSTITUTION: The readily dispersible titanium dioxide is produced by mixing titanium dioxide; about 1W20wt%, preferably 3W18wt%, based on titanium dioxide, of a surfactant having a HLB of not higher than 10, such as a beeswax derivative, sorbitan fatty acid ester, propylene glycol fatty acid ester, polyoxypropylene alkyl ether, or alkyl ether phosphoric acid ester; and 3W50 times the weight of titanium dioxide of an oily solvent having a b.p. of at least 100°C, such as toluene, xylene, or dimethylheptane: heating the resulting mixture with stirring preferably to a temperature of at least 100°C: removing the moisture present in the titanium dioxide: and thereby adhering the surfactant to the titanium dioxide.
