Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as perfumes simply, by ring closure of a γ-hydroxy-α,β-enone, which is available from α-sulfenyl-α, β-enone, with an acid.
CONSTITUTION: A γ-hydroxy-α,β-enone, e.g. 5-hydroxy-3-undecene-2-one, of formula I: (R1 and R2 are H, 4W6C alkyl groups, at least one of them is H) is subjected to ring closure with a catalytic amount of an acid, e.g. sulfuric or phosphoric acid, to give the objective compound of formula II: (R is 4W6C alkyl group). The starting compound of formula I can be readily obtained by oxidizing an α-sulfenyl-α,β-enone to form a sulfoxide, which is subjected to [2,3] sigmatropic rearrangemnt.
