Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a small sized and highly reliable cell by using as an electrolyte an AgI-Ag2O-B2O3 ternary composition made up in a fixed molal proportion in a cell with Ag as cathode and a iodine-containing complex compound as anode.
CONSTITUTION: The cell uses Ag as cathode, a material containing one or more of the complex compounds of a condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon such as pyrene, perylene, violanthrene, etc., and iodine, e.g., poly (2-vinyl pyridine)-I2, as anode, and an AgI-Ag2O-B2O3 ternary composition as solid electrolyte. The molal ratios x, y, and z of each components of the ternary composition sholud be within the polygonal range surrounded by the points A, B, ... M, and N when plotting them on a graph, as shown separately. For example, the molal ratio of the point A(x; 0.88, y; 0.06, z; 0.06) is recommendble. The unit cell for this cell is made up by laminating the cathode 3, the solid electrolyte 4, and the anode 5 in order, and two or more of the unit cells are combined in a series or in parallel to form a cell.
