Abstract
PURPOSE: To raise the cooling efficiency, reduce the size and facilitate the manufacture of a superconductive cable which consists of a superconductive body and a stabilizing material and is stable even if it is shifted into an ordinarily conductive state, by making the cooling surface of the superconductive cable from foamed metal.
CONSTITUTION: The cooling surface of the superconductive cable 2 consisting of the superconductive body 1 and the stabilizing material 3 is made from the foamed metal (tridimensionally reticulate porous metal) 7. For example, superconductive wires 4 consisting of superconductive cores 1 made of an intermetallic compound such as V3Ga or alloy such as Nb-Ti and the stabilizing material 3 such as copper or aluminum are flatly twisted together, thereby obtaining the superconductive body 2. This body 2 is embedded in another stabilizing material 5 such as copper or aluminum, which has a recess 6. The foamed metal 7 such as copper or aluminium is filled in the recess 6. Since the foamed metal 7 has a cooling surface area hundreds of times higher than the outside surface area 8, the superconductive cable of high cooling efficiency and thermal stability and small size can be manufactured.
