PURPOSE:To simplify the constitution of a signal transmission system for bidirectionally transmitting to a central unit upon connection of a number of terminal units to a pair of signal lines by eliminating a clock generator, a timer, and an oscillator at the terminal unit side. CONSTITUTION:In a multi-drop type signal transmission system for bidirectionally transmitting to a central unit 1 upon connection of a number of terminal units 2a to 2n to a pair of signal lines 3, a calling signal of clock is transmitted from the unit 1, and demodulated at the terminal units 2a to 2n upon reception via a PLL15. Thus, the former half of the demodulated calling signal is detected to count the number of the series of calling signals by a counter 17. If there is return information at the time point when the number coincides with the self address, the latter half of the calling signal is converted in frequency through an AND gate 18 and a gate 20, and returned to the unit 1 through the signal lines 3.
