Abstract

PURPOSE: Crystalline polypropylene is heated along with a specific diphenylethane as a catalyst under specific conditions to produce lower molecular weight polypropylene having good processability since its molecular weight distribution is sharp.
CONSTITUTION: A diphenylethane derivative of formula I [R5, R6 are phenyl or phenyl substituted with 1W4C alkyls; R1, R2 are 1W4C alkyl; R3, R4 are bromine, 1W4C alkyl] as 1,2-tetramethyl-1,2-phenylethane or 1,2-tetramethyl-1,2- phenylethane is added to a crystalline polypropylene in an amount of 0.001W5 wt% as a catalyst and they are heated at 200W350°C within about 1 hr. The use of an antioxidant along with above catalyst for reducing the molecular weight is desired to improve the mechanical properties of the products.
