Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an azo-compound useful as blowing agents in high yield and purity, by purifying crude aminonitrile with vacuum distillation under specific conditions, and by reacting the distillate with an aqueous solution of a metal hypochlorite, whose pH is adjusted, under mild conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A crude aminonitrile of formula I: [R is methyl, ethyl or group of formula II(M is alkali or alkaline earth metal)], obtained by reacting (a) a cyanohydrin with (b) NH3, or (c) a ketone with hydrocyanic acid and NH3 is vacuum distilled at 0W50°C under a pressure of 400 mmHg or below and purified to an NH3 content of at least 1.5 wt.% or less. The purified aminonitrile is then reacted with a ≤5 wt.% aqueous solution of a metal hypochlorite of formula M(OX)n (X is Cl, Br, etc,; n is valence of M), whose pH is adjusted to 10W13.5, at 30°C or below to give an azo-compound of formula III.
EFFECT: The azo-compound can be used as a blowing agent and radical polymenization initiotor simply by rinsing or drying without using expensive hydrazines.
