Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a thermoplastic resin having excellent heat resistance, resistance to color development by heating, transparency, and water resistance, by the ring-opening copolymerization of a norbornene derivative with a dimethanooctahydronaphthalene derivative in the presence of a metathesis catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A copolymer composed of (A) 90-10 parts by weight of a norbornene derivative of formula I [X1 is H, CH3; Y1 is H, COOR (R is alkyl), CN] and (B) 10-90 parts by weight of a dimethanooctahydronaphthalene derivative of formula II [X2 is H, CH3; Y2 is H, COOR (R is alkyl, CN)], provided that at least one group selected from X1, X2, Y1, and Y2 is COOR or CN, and at least one of Y1 and Y2 is not CN, is prepared by the ring-opening copolymerization of the (A) and the (B) components in the presence of a metathesis catalyst, in the presence or absence of (C) an elastic unsaturated polymer.
