Abstract
PURPOSE: The direct oxidative of a phenol derivation is conducted using at least one peroxide selected from organic peracids, hydrogen peroxide and others in the presen ce of a catalyst of polyhydric phenol that has adjecent hydroxyl groups on the carbon atoms of the aromatic ring to produce dihydric phenols in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The direct oxidation of a phenol derivative as phenol is carried out by using at least one perioxide selected from the group consisting of organic peracids as peracetic acid, hydrogen perixide and organic hydroperoxides in the presence of a catalyst of polyhydric phenol that has adjacent hydroxyl groups on carbon atoms of the aromatic ring such as pyrogallol or pyrocatechol to produce dihydric phenols such as mixture of pyrocatechol and hydroquinone. The amount of the polyhydric phenol as catalyst is 10-5 - 10-1 mole per mole of the phenol derivative.
EFFECT: The reaction smoothly proceeds even is a very small amount of the catalyst.
