Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the permanent breakdown of a GTO thyristor due to abnormality, by turning ON the GTO thyristor again accurately by supplying a large gate- on current from the power supply of a turning-off gate circuit of the GTO thyristor.
CONSTITUTION: The circuit which turns off thyristor 1 by applying a positive or negative gate signal to gate 5 of GTO thyristor 1 is provided with reigniting gate electrode 14 in addition to gate 5. Detecting the turn-off failure of GTO thyristor 1, reigniting gate electrode 14 flows a reigniting gate current so as to reignite the GTO thyristor forcibly, thereby preventing the breakdown of the GTO thyristor due to a turn-off failure.
