Abstract

PURPOSE: A styrene polymer with reduced deactivation of polymerization active sites by heat and chain transfer is obtained by adding a conjugated diene to a styrene polymer when the multi-stage and adiabatic polymerization using an anion polymierization initiator finishes.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of a styrene polymer using an anionic initiator in a hydrocarbon solvent by multi-stage adiabatic polymerization, a conjugated diene in an amount of 0.5-20 times the molar quantity of the active chain terminals is added when the multi-stage polymerization finishes. The diene used is, e.g., butadiene, isoprene, or 2,3-dimethylbutadiene. The styrene monomer is, e.g., styrene, 2-methylstyrene, vinylnaphthalene. The anionic initiator is, e.g., primary, secondary, or tertiary butyllithium, oligobutadienyllithium.
