Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel compound, 2-hydroxymethylperhydrotriquinacene is made to react with conc. sulfuric acid and a compound giving hydride anion to yield readily title compound useful as synthetic intermediate for antiviral agent.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of 2-hydroxymethylperhydroquinacene of formula I with conc. sulfuric acid, preferably 90-98% concentration, in an amount of 10- 100 times the weight of the triquinacene, and a substance giving hydride anion such as n-pentane in an amount of 10-1000 times the triquinacene is conducted to yield the objective 4-homoisotwistan (tricylclo[5.3.1.03.8] undecane). The reaction temperature is preferably 20-30°C. The compound of formula I is novel and prepared by hidroboration of 2-methyleneperhydrotriquinacene resulting from wittig reaction between perhydrotriquinacene-2-one and methylenetriphenyl-phosphorane.
