Abstract
PURPOSE: To perform inspection nondestructively, readily and surely by optically detecting the residual stresses in a preform through polarization and measuring the refractive index differences of the clad and core.
CONSTITUTION: When a preform 1 formed by the core 1a and clad 1b in a matching oil 16 is scanned with the laser light of a laser light source 11, the radiation light is polarized by a polarizing plate 13a which constitutes crossed Nicols together with a polarizing plate 13b. When there are no residual stresses in the preform at the time of this scanning, the polarized beam is cut off by the polarizing plate 13b and when there are residual stresses, it becomes the polarized component light of different optical path length differences and the plane of plarization rotates according to the residual stresses at the time of passing through the preform 1. Then, the polarized light through the polarizing plate 13b is detected with a photo detector 12 and the refractive index differences of the core and clad parts proportional to the optical path length differences are displayed and measured as levels of waveforms and the core diameters as waveform widths on a recorder 17. Hence, the need for laborious operations, etc. is eliminated and nondestructive, sure and safe inspection may be readily performed.
