Abstract
PURPOSE:To carry out efficient and reliable heat treatment using laser without melting a product to be worked, by setting the power density of laser beam lower than that of an equation at which the product is melted. CONSTITUTION:When a product to be worked is heat treated using laser beam, the melting limit power density Pm of the product is caluculated according to the equation (where Tm; the m.p. of the product, K; heat conductivity, R; heat diffusivity, t; the pulse width of laser beam and a; the spot radius of laser beam). The power density of laser beam to be radiated to the product is set lower than the value of the equation, and the product surface is subjected to heat treatment such as hardening. By this method the power density of laser beam can be set simply and good heat tratment can be performed.
